Awards

The IEEE Sensors Council offers the following awards to acknowledge the achievements of leaders in the sensors professional community:

Outstanding Service Award for Promoting Gender Diversity

The IEEE Sensors Council Outstanding Service Award for Promoting Gender Diversity is awarded to an IEEE member who made outstanding contributions to gender diversity in the IEEE field of sensors – in quantity and quality of activity and impact – as evidenced for instance by leadership in events, technical projects, educational activities and mentorship programs. Cumulative achievements will be considered, but the greatest weight will be given to impact of contributions during the past five years.

Involvement with the Council activities is preferred but not compulsory.

The winner of this Sensors Council Award is presented with a plaque and $1,000 check and up to $1,000 travel reimbursement to attend the conference to receive the award in person. Conference registration will also be waived. Travel reimbursement will follow the IEEE policies and procedures.

Outstanding Chapter Award

The IEEE Sensors Council Outstanding Chapter Award, constituted in 2017, is given to the best chapter in a given calendar year based on activity. The prize is $1,000 USD and a certificate. Any chapter of the IEEE Sensors Council that has been established for two years from the date of its formation till the closing date of application or longer is eligible for this award.

Technical Achievement Award

The IEEE Sensors Council Technical Achievement Award (four Awards given) honors a person with outstanding technical contributions within the scope of the IEEE Sensors Council, as documented by publications and patents. It is based on the general quality and originality of contributions. The winner of this Award is presented with a plaque and $2,000 check. Awards are available in two fields: Sensors and Sensor Systems or Networks; within each field, an Early Career and an Advanced Career award will be given. Early Career awards are for individuals within 15 years of receiving the first degree. Advanced Career awards are for individuals beyond 15 years of the first degree. The same application form should be used for both Early Career and Advanced Career awards and applications should be directed to the respective field award committee chairs:


John Vig Meritorious Service Award

The IEEE Sensors Council John Vig Meritorious Service Award honors a person with outstanding long-term service to the IEEE Sensors Council. It is based on dedication, effort, and contributions. The winner of this Award is presented with a plaque and $2,000 check.


Sensors Journal Best Paper and Runner Up Award

The IEEE Sensors Journal Best Paper and Runner Up Award recognizes the best paper(s) published in the IEEE Sensors Journal during the past calendar year preceding the award. It is based on general quality, originality, contributions, subject matter and timeliness. The winners of the Award are presented with a certificate and $2,000 split equally among the authors. The Runner Up winners receive a certificate.


Internet of Things Journal Best Paper and Runner Up Award

The IEEE Internet of Things Journal Best Paper and Runner Up Award recognizes the best papers published in the IEEE Internet of Things Journal. The award is based on originality, impact, and relevance to the IoT-J’s scope. Author(s) of any research paper published in the IEEE Internet of Things Journal during the three calendar years preceding the date of the award is/are eligible. The winners of the Award are presented with a plaque and $2,000 split equally among the authors. The Runner Up winners receive a certificate.


Internet of Things Journal Outstanding Service Award

The Internet of Things Journal Outstanding Service Award honors long and distinguished service to the IEEE Internet of Things Journal. The award is open to all who have contributed to the IEEE IoT-J. The winner of this award is presented with a plaque and a $2,000 check.


Young Professional Award

The IEEE Sensors Council Young Professional Award is given annually to promote, recognize and support contributions from young professional members within the fields of interest of the IEEE Sensors Council. This award recognizes leadership in service, education, innovation, entrepreneurship or in furthering the goals of the IEEE Young Professionals program in the fields of interest of the Council. Eligible candidates must be IEEE Young Professionals at the time of the nomination deadline. The winner of this Sensors Council Award is presented with a plaque and $1,000 check and up to $1,000 for expenses to travel to the conference.


Lifetime Contribution Award

The IEEE Sensors Council Lifetime Contribution Award recognizes extraordinary contributions to the Council, in duration and magnitude of impact. Eligible candidates must have contributed to Council activities over a period of more than ten years and must have served in multiple elected leadership roles within the Council. Recipients will receive a plaque and will be designated as “IEEE Sensors Council Life AdCom Members”. Recipients of this award will be invited to attend all meetings of the IEEE Sensors Council AdCom and are also eligible to receive the following:

  • up to $2500 in travel allowances to attend the IEEE SENSORS conference where the award will be presented
  • meals and lodging associated with attendance at IEEE Sensors Council AdCom meetings (airfare or other transportation costs will not be covered)
  • complimentary registration for all IEEE SENSORS conferences


Sensors Letters Best Paper and Runner Up Award

The IEEE Sensors Letters Best Paper and Runner Up Award recognizes the best paper(s) published in the IEEE Sensors Letters during the past calendar year preceding the award. It is based on general quality, originality, contributions, subject matter and timeliness. The winners of the Award are presented with a certificate and $2,000 split equally among the authors. The Runner Up winners receive a certificate.


Nominations are due May 23, 2023.

Presentations. These annual awards are presented at the IEEE SENSORS Conference held typically in late October or early November each year. Selected award winners may be announced on the IEEE Sensors Council website, newsletter, and Council social media Facebook, Twitter and/or LinkedIn.

In case of discrepancy, the award rules listed in the IEEE TAB awards manual will prevail.


Sensors Journal Editorial Board Awards

The IEEE Sensors Council Publications Committee and the Journal’s Editor-in-Chief offer Best Performing Associate Editor and Best Performing Topical Editor awards to members of the Journal Editorial Board.  These awards nominations are automatically generated from performance metrics established by the Publications Committee.
